How to Create a Calming Bedtime Routine

If you have trouble falling asleep at night, you’ll be happy to know there are steps you can take other than counting sheep. Creating a calming routine to follow every night can help you relax and unwind so that you can fall asleep more easily. Consider the following when building your nighttime routine:

  • Create a relaxing bedroom with a comfortable mattress and pillows, and minimal light 
  • Choose a bedtime and try to stick to it every night to help your body’s internal clock adjust
  • Put your electronics away at least 30 minutes to an hour before you fall asleep
  • Choose a relaxing activity to help you transition into bedtime, such as reading, knitting, drawing, or soaking in the bath 
  • Don’t get into your bed until you’re ready to sleep, and try to avoid using your bed for things like reading, watching TV, doing paperwork, etc.

These are just a few ideas to help you get started creating your bedtime routine. Of course, everyone’s different and what works for one person may not be what’s best for you. To figure out your ideal routine, you’ll likely have to try out a few different combinations and see what works.
