How Often to Clean Things

We all spend a lot of time cleaning – cleaning our clothes, our homes, and ourselves. This causes some of us to wonder, am I spending too much time cleaning? Or too little time? How often should various things be cleaned?

While the frequency of cleaning anything can depend on many factors, there is a general consensus about how often items should be cleaned. Here is a ballpark for some of the most commonly cleaned things:

  • Bath towels – should be washed after three uses, or at the very least, once a week. It’s important to hang them up to air dry after each use, to prevent odors from forming.
  • Handbags and wallets – should be cleaned once a week. Many people are surprised to learn that their purse or wallet is one of the dirtiest items they own, harboring many different types of bacteria.
  • Jeans – denim is made to be worn up to four or five times before washing it, unless it is stained.
  • Hair – this can vary quite a bit. As a general rule, hair can be washed every other day and stay clean, but people who work outside or exercise daily might need to wash their hair daily, while people with dry hair might want to skip a day or two in between washings.
  • Sheets – should be washed once a week to remove dust and allergens.
  • Washer-dryer – should be wiped down and cleaned once a month. Refer to your user’s manual or contact the manufacturer to find out the best way to wash the inside of the washer. Some recommend filling the empty washer using the highest load size, hottest water setting, and longest wash. Add a quart of vinegar and a cup of baking soda. Allow the mixture to soak in the washer tub for about an hour, then close the lid to complete the cycle.
  • Oven – should be cleaned very three to six months. The longer the time between cleanings, the harder it will be to remove stains and grease.
  • Kitchen sink – clean it every day.
  • Toilet bowl – once a week.
  • Pillows – wash every three to six months.
  • Mattress – every six months.
