Getting Rid of Negative Thoughts

Did you ever have one of those days when you felt like you were plagued by negative thoughts? If so, you’re not alone. Negative thoughts run through the minds of even the most positive people – it’s only human.

  1. The next time you feel like you’re stuck in a negative frame of mind, try the following strategy for snapping yourself out of it:
  2. First, get some paper and a pen, or sit down at your computer and open Microsoft Word or a similar writing program.
  3. Then, start writing about what’s troubling you. Think about exactly how you feel and try to put those feelings into words. Get it all out on paper (or on the screen).

Repeat the above two steps for three days in a row.

On the fourth day, read over the words you’ve written. Chances are, you’ll find that each time you wrote about your negative thoughts, you got better at expressing them. At first, your writings may seem jumbled and hard to understand, but over time, you found the words you needed to verbalize exactly how you felt and why. Believe it or not, just being able to describe your situation better can help you feel more optimistic. Feel free to keep up this exercise, as it can give you the ability to accept, and then let go of your negative thoughts.
