Using a Smart Speaker in Your Apartment

Smart speakers are a new innovation that many people utilize to make their lives easier. You can control these Wi-Fi enabled speakers via spoken commands. Tell it to play your favorite song, relay the weather forecast, or communicate with other devices in the home! Right now, two smart speakers dominate the marketplace. While they can both perform many of the same basic functions, they do have some differences.

  • Amazon Echo – You can alert the Echo by using the voice command “Alexa.” It is connected to the user’s Amazon account. Users can ask it for weather updates and traffic reports, set reminders and timers, and add items to a grocery list through voice commands, just to name a few of its capabilities. It is also compatible with the music streaming service Spotify, which is a plus if you already have a Spotify account. Additionally, the Echo can be connected to Philips Hue home automation products such as light bulbs. By integrating these, you can ask Alexa to turn lights on and off around the house.

  • Google Home – You alert this speaker using the words “OK Google.”  It utilizes the biggest search engine in the world (Google) to answer any questions you ask it, so the results are usually trustworthy. Additionally, you can voice-control YouTube and Netflix videos on your TV with this speaker, and it is also compatible with Spotify, like the Echo.

The best way to decide which smart speaker is right for your apartment is to decide which features are most important to you, then research which speakers deliver those features.
