Common Household Items You Can Clean With

Choosing from the seemingly hundreds of products offered in the cleaning supplies aisle can be overwhelming. You may find yourself wondering how many of these products are actually necessary. It turns out, not too many. A lot of cleaning products can be replaced with common household items, making the cleaning process easier and more affordable. Consider these four tips for cleaning your apartment with items you likely already own.

  • Mop with Vinegar - Vinegar is a natural disinfectant that doesn’t leave behind residue or streaks. You can use it to make your own floor cleaner by mixing one half cup of distilled white vinegar with one gallon of warm water. If the smell bothers you, try mixing in an additional tablespoon of scented dish soap to neutralize it.
  • Scrub the Sink with Baking Soda - Baking soda makes a great cleaner because it is gritty enough to scrub away grime but soft enough to avoid scratching. To clean your kitchen sink with baking soda, start by rinsing it out with warm water. Then, sprinkle a layer of baking soda and scrub it in with a sponge. Let the baking soda sit for a few minutes and then rinse it away with vinegar. Finally, rinse the sink with water again and dry with a paper towel. For extra shine, add a few drops of olive oil to the towel and rub it into the sink as you dry.
  • Deodorize the Garbage Disposal with Citrus - If your garbage disposal is smelling a little off, drop in a few citrus peels and run it. The acidity of the citrus will help reduce unpleasant odors.
  • Sanitize Countertops with Hydrogen Peroxide - While most people associate hydrogen peroxide with first aid kits, its disinfecting properties can also be used for cleaning. Take advantage of this by filling a non-transparent spray bottle with 3% hydrogen peroxide and use it to spray down your countertops. Let it sit for a few minutes and then wipe clean with a damp cloth.
