Learning about Daylight Saving Time at Our Apartments in Lady Lake, FL

Daylight Saving Time is the practice of setting the clocks forward by one hour in the spring, so that daylight is extended into the evening hours, and then setting them back to standard time in the fall. It was first implemented on April 30, 1916 by Germany and Austria-Hungary, and eventually it was written into U.S. Federal law as The Uniform Time Act of 1966. Even though it is part of U.S. Federal law, states are allowed to pass their own laws to exempt themselves from participation. Some experts argue that there are many positives to using Daylight Saving Time, including that it conserves energy otherwise spent on artificial light, which is a main reason why the federal government passed Daylight Saving Time into law.

Here are some interesting facts about Daylight Saving Time:

• The idea was originally conceived by Benjamin Franklin in 1784 while he was in Paris. He observed that many people were working late into the night yet slept past dawn in the summertime, which wasted precious early morning sunlight. By setting the clocks forward, there is more natural sunlight to take advantage of.

• Arizona (except for the Navajo Nation) and Hawaii are the only two U.S. states that don’t observe Daylight Saving Time.

• Since 2007, Daylight Saving Time has started on the second Sunday of March and ended on the first Sunday of November.

• Daylight Saving Time has been extended three different times: in the 1970s, the 1980s, and also in 2007.
