Tips for Falling Asleep Quickly

According to a survey from Consumer Reports, 27 percent of people say they have trouble falling asleep most nights, and a whopping 68 percent said they have trouble falling asleep at least once a week. It is recommended that adults should get between 7 and 8 hours of sleep every night. If you are one of those people who have trouble falling asleep, try some of the following tips:

  • Eliminate caffeine in the afternoon – Drinking caffeine too late into the afternoon or at night can keep your body stimulated for too long and make it difficult to relax and fall asleep.
  • Unplug from all electronics – Turn off your phone, TV, laptop, or any other electronic device you may use, at least 30 minutes before bed. The lights from these devices have been scientifically proven to keep people up at night.
  • Keep the temperature cool – People tend to fall asleep quicker in colder temperatures. Setting your thermostat to 65 degrees or colder may help you fall asleep quicker.
  • Take a warm shower before bed – Studies have found that the temperature drop from taking a warm shower and then stepping into cooler air slows down your metabolism, and prepares your body for sleep.
  • Practice breathing exercises – Slowing down and focusing on your breathing has been proven to relax your mind and help you fall asleep quickly. Look up the 4-7-8 breathing technique for a detailed breathing technique that supposedly can help you fall asleep in just one minute.
