How Long Can I Freeze This Food?

Since grocery stores often sell food in large prepacked quantities, it can be difficult to eat it all before it goes bad. To help food last as long as possible, many of us store it in the freezer, thinking it will keep the food edible for the foreseeable future. However, this begs the question, how long can we keep food in the freezer? Do some types of food last longer than other types when frozen?

The following list will give you an idea on the recommended frozen storage times for various types of food. For a more complete list of foods and how long they can be frozen, go to www.freezerlabels.net/frozen-food-storage-times-infographic.

  • Bacon – 1 month
  • Baked bread and rolls – 2 to 3 months
  • Baked muffins – 6 to 12 months
  • Hard and soft cheese – 6 months
  • Chicken and turkey parts – 9 months
  • Cooked casseroles – 3 months
  • Cooked fish – 4 to 6 months
  • Fatty fish – 2 to 3 months
  • Ice cream – 2 months
  • Lamb – 9 months
  • Pizza – 1 to 2 months
  • Raw hamburger – 3 to 4 months
  • Soups and stews, vegetable and meat – 2 to 3 months
  • Steaks – 6 to 12 months

Believe it or not, there are some foods you should never freeze. These include deli meats, hard boiled eggs, coffee, salads (egg salad, chicken salad, tuna salad, etc.), pasta, and rice.
