Organizing a Junk Drawer

We all have at least one of them – that junk drawer, usually in the kitchen, where all the odds-and-ends go. You know that drawer, the one stuffed with random pens, pencils, paper clips, scissors, tape, pain reliever, recipes, string, rubber bands, a calculator, instruction manuals, takeout menus, and batteries, among many other things.

While it’s great to have stuff tucked away in a drawer, it becomes a problem when that drawer becomes so disorganized that it’s impossible to find anything in the drawer and dig it out. Thankfully, there is a solution to this problem, and it does not require the purchase of a fancy drawer organizer.

The first step to making your junk drawer more accessible is finding small containers to put in the drawer. Look around your apartment and gather any type of small box or other container you think could work in various sizes, for example:

  • Check boxes and lids
  • Shoe box lids
  • Metal tins and lids
  • Small bowls
  • Jewelry boxes
  • Stationery boxes and lids

Once you have gathered your containers, empty your junk drawer and arrange your containers inside the drawer so that they fit as snugly as possible and fill the drawer completely. When you’re done, you should have a drawer full of open boxes, lids, bowls, etc., ready to store your items.

Now, put all your items back into your drawer by placing them in the containers where they fit best. And there you have it – a better-organized junk drawer where you can see and access your possessions, and it didn’t cost you a penny!
