In a very real sense, people form relationships with the apartments they live in—for better or for worse. There are some apartments that help foster your well-being and some that bring added stress into your life. If you currently live in an apartment and are wondering whether you should start looking for a new one, consider these six tell-tale signs it’s time to move on:
Money, Money, Money
Financial difficulties are why many renters decide to look for a new apartment. If you can no longer afford your apartment for any reason—you’ve taken a hit to your income, you no longer have a roommate, or there was a rent increase with your lease renewal, etc.—it may be time to start looking for a more affordable place.
The opposite can be true, as well. Perhaps your income has gone up significantly since you’ve signed the lease on your current apartment. If that’s the case, you may be willing to apply more money toward your living expenses and move into a more luxurious upgrade.
Lack of Space
Many people simply outgrow their apartment. If you have begun to accumulate more things and have no space to keep them all in your apartment, you may want to find a place that offers ample storage. Or, your family may have increased in size, in which case you need to look for an apartment with more bedrooms. In either case, if it is not possible to move into a bigger unit in the same building, you’ll be benefit from finding a roomier apartment elsewhere.
Stressful Commute
If you drive to work every day, then you know your commute can have a big impact on your stress levels. If your current apartment is too far away from your school or place of employment, you can avoid much of the inconvenience, annoyance, and gas expense by looking for an apartment that offers a shorter commute.
Poor Management
Some renters move on because they have a problem with property management. If the building or amenities are not being properly maintained, or management is taking too long to respond to maintenance requests, then you have every reason to move into a different apartment where you won’t have those ongoing issues.
Bad Roommate
If your roommate is not cleaning up after him- or herself, invites noisy friends over often, or is generally problematic, he or she can significantly diminish the comfort and joy you experience in your own home. If your roommate is ruining your bliss and planning on renewing the lease, it is time to move on to another apartment—without your roommate.
Lack of Security
It goes without saying that it is important for you to feel safe within your home. If your apartment is in a bad neighborhood or lacks security features, such as a gated entry, 24-hour surveillance, and double-locks on doors, you’d be better off looking for an apartment that takes your safety seriously and has these features in place.
