How the Two-Minute Rule Helps People Get More Done

Many people struggle with procrastination. Considering how busy we all are and how many distractions are in our lives, it’s all too easy to avoid doing chores and other tasks we don’t like in favor of other activities that are more enjoyable.

However, there is one simple way to help beat the procrastination bug and be more productive. It’s called the “Two-Minute Rule.” This rule has two parts that are easy to remember and easy to implement, as well:

  • Part one – If the task at hand takes two minutes or LESS to complete, then it should be done right away. It’s amazing to think about all the tasks that are avoided even when it would take under two minutes to complete them. For example, taking out the trash, cleaning up a little clutter, emptying the dishwasher – why avoid those things when they can be done and out of the way so quickly? So remember, if it takes less than two minutes, do it.
  • Part two – If the task at hand takes MORE than two minutes to complete, start it! Of course not every task takes two minutes or less, but for those dreaded tasks that take more than two minutes, the Two-Minute Rule says to go ahead and start them. The theory here is that once someone starts something and continues on for two minutes, momentum will keep them going. They just have to get over that hump of starting the task, and the rest should take care of itself.

So, whether someone wants to read a book, go for a daily walk, or pay bills, the trick is to start it by reading a page, getting those shoes on and going outside, or sitting down with the stack of bills and paying one. Once someone breaks through the inertia, it’s easier to keep on going.
