Some people seem to be natural cleaners and organizers. They have the gift of hyper-focus and think nothing of devoting an entire day to making their homes spotless and perfect. The rest of us, however, are not so lucky. Whether we feel overwhelmed, distracted, busy, or lazy, we struggle with the prospect of spending hours upon hours cleaning and organizing our homes.
For that second group of people, the 20/10 rule might be helpful. This rule works as follows:
- 20 minutes of work – Dedicate 20 minutes to a task, whether it’s laundry, dishes, or organizing paperwork. Just stay focused for 20 minutes.
- 10 minutes of break time – Once you’ve spent 20 minutes on work, reward yourself with a 10-minute break.
- Start again – After your 10-minute break, go back to cleaning, decluttering, and organizing for 20 minutes.
The theory is that, by breaking up the hours of work you have to do into manageable chunks of time, you get something done (instead of nothing) and you’ll be surprised by how much you can accomplish in half-hour timespans. Even one 20/10 cycle can be a time when laundry can be folded, dishes can be put away, or junk mail can be scanned and tossed.
