While nothing compares to the delightful smell and taste of fresh-baked bread, baking a loaf of bread from scratch can be a time-consuming process. In fact, many people shy away from baking bread from scratch for this reason. Another deterrent is the fact that bread dough doesnt always rise the way it should or reach the right consistency. But, if youve been contemplating trying to bake a loaf of bread from scratch, follow the recipe below and youll be a master bread baker in no time.
To bake a loaf of bread from scratch, here are the ingredients you will need:
Ό cup milk
1 ½ tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 ½ tablespoons butter
1 packet active dry yeast
2 ½ cups flour (opt for bread flour, if available)
And, to make the bread, here are the steps:
Step 1 Add dry yeast and 1 cup of warm water to a warm mixing bowl. Let this mixture rest for about 10 minutes (it should become foamy.)
Step 2 Pour the mixture into a large mixing bowl, and then combine the milk, sugar, salt, and melted butter. Add 2 cups of flour and stir well. (An electric mixer or whisk will work best.) Then, add the remaining flour (1/4 cup at a time) to the mixture until the dough is slightly sticky. (You may need to add more flour until it reaches the right consistency.)
Step 3 Take the dough out of the bowl and place it onto a floured surface. Knead the dough for 10 minutes by hand.
Step 4 Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a greased mixing bowl. Cover it with a towel and let it rise until it doubles in size (typically, this will take 1 ½ hours.)
Step 5 Take the dough out of the bowl and use a rolling pin to flatten the dough. Shape it into a loaf, and then place it in a loaf pan. Let the dough rise for about 1 hour.
Step 6 Place the bread in a 400-degree oven for about 30 minutes. Let it cool for at least five minutes before serving.
