While you probably know about the importance of having health and vehicle insurance, renters insurance is an often overlooked necessity. As an apartment renter, having renters insurance is critical to protecting your belongings. This is because a landlord’s property insurance does not cover your personal effects, which means that if any of your belongings are damaged or lost due to a natural disaster, fire, or theft, you’ll bear the sole responsibility of replacing them.
In order to document your belongings for your renters insurance (and also for your own information) it’s always a good idea to make a detailed inventory of all of the possessions you have at your apartment at The Quarters. It is especially important to document your most valuable belongings from a monetary standpoint, including electronics, furniture, and collectibles. Your inventory list should include:
• A listing of every item, including its brand, serial number, description, and model number, as applicable
• The exact or estimated monetary value of each item on the list
• Any purchase receipts you still have for the items
• Multiple photographs of each of the items. Taking video of your most valuable possessions is also recommended.
• Once you’ve completed the above steps, make a backup copy of your list and store it somewhere safe. A couple of good ideas are to either create your list digitally with a word processor and save multiple copies of it in different physical locations, or to scan your physical list into a computer and store it on a USB, portable hard drive, cloud server, or somewhere else so long as the backup duplicate is stored outside of the apartment itself.
Once you’ve completed your list, you’ll not only have the comfort of knowing precisely everything that you own, but you’ll be able to determine the level of renters insurance coverage that best suits your needs.
