Sneezing, water eyes, and a runny nose aren’t fun for anyone. If you suffer from allergies, nasal congestion, or sinus headaches, a neti pot may be able to help you find some relief from the pressure and discomfort associated with seasonal allergies. But what is a neti pot and how does it work?
Using a neti pot is a form of ancient nasal irrigation. The practice was originally called “Jala Neti,” which is Sanskrit for “water cleansing.” A neti pot is a clay, glass, or ceramic container with a spout, slightly resembling a very small cream pitcher. Fill the pot with lukewarm saline solution, then slowly pour the water into one nostril and allow it to drain out the other nostril.
While this may sound uncomfortable, the trick to successfully using a neti pot is not to inhale through your nose while allowing the water to drain through your nasal passage. Instead, try to stay relaxed and only inhale through your mouth. You should also keep your head tilted to one side during the draining process, rather than tilting it straight back.
If you would like to try using a neti pot with saline solution, both are widely available at drug stores. You can also make your own saline solution with 8 ounces of distilled or purified warm water and about half a teaspoon of sea salt. Do not use table salt or industrial salt, which often have chemical additives. For individuals with chronic allergies or long-term sinus problems, always consult your doctor before using a neti pot.
