No matter how hard you try to stay organized, life can bring a lot of stuff your way, and sometimes it’s not easy to keep up with what items you should keep and what items you should give away. One of the toughest questions you might ask yourself when organizing and decluttering your apartment is, what if you get rid of something that you might need in the future? Won’t you be mad at yourself for throwing a useful item away or donating it to charity?
Here is a rule that might help you with this quandary – it’s called the 90/90 Rule. With this rule, you ask yourself two questions about items you are unsure about keeping:
- Question #1 – Have you used the item in the past 90 days?
- Question #2 – Will you use the item in the next 90 days?
If you answer “no” to both of these questions, it’s a pretty safe bet that you can purge the possession. However, there is some flexibility with this rule. For instance, you’ll probably want to keep seasonal clothing that you’ll need when the weather changes. Also, belongings like suitcases, tools, and holiday decorations would be good to keep even if you haven’t used them recently, as they are expensive or often needed in a pinch, so it’s not easy to go out and buy them on a dime. That also means you can adjust the 90/90 rule to be another number of days, like 120 or 150 days – whatever you feel comfortable with, as long as you arrive at a plan that helps you declutter your life and become more organized.
