Acupuncture is the process of inserting extremely thin needles through the skin at strategic points on the body. These points are said to stimulate nerves, muscles, and connective tissues, boosting the activity of the body’s natural painkillers and increasing the blood flow throughout the body. Between five to 20 needles may be used in one treatment, but since they are thin, generally very little pain is felt. The needles will remain in place for about 10 to 20 minutes. In some cases, a practitioner may gently twirl the needles, or apply heat or mild electrical pulses to the needles during the treatment.
