Living rooms are arguably the most popular rooms in any home, and yet many people struggle with arranging them to be truly comfortable and “livable.” From the furniture being too big to the entryways being too narrow, there are many mistakes to be made when arranging a living room.
Below are a few suggestions to make living rooms a more livable space:
- Keep your entryways clear – Try to make the entryways to your living room as open as possible. Don’t block your entryways with furniture, plants, or decorations. You want the room to be as accessible as possible which will make it feel more welcoming, too.
- Mind your lighting – Table lamps should be small enough that they are not at risk of being bumped into, and their power cords should be placed so that no one will trip over them.
- Remember the 3-foot clearance guideline – A good rule of thumb is to provide 3 feet of clearance around any object in your living room. This will give you enough space to walk around couches, chairs, tables, and electronics without the fear of bumping into anything. Three feet is also a good clearance for furniture with opening drawers.
- Be careful with rugs – When placing area rugs, make sure any furniture on top of the rug is either completely on the rug or completely off it. Otherwise, the furniture will wobble. Also be careful not to place the edges of rugs near major walkways where people might trip when they go through the room.
- Don’t get too heavy – A room full of big, heavy furniture can look daunting. Balance your furniture pieces; for every large piece, add a lighter element (for example, balance a heavy couch with a light coffee table).
