How to Clean Your Mattresses

Cleaning a mattress is not an easy chore, but it is a necessary one. Since you probably spend one-third of your life on your mattress, it can get dirty over time. Cleaning your mattress regularly can help it last longer and also can help you sleep better. Thankfully, a mattress only needs to be cleaned a couple times per year, in most cases. In times past, it was recommended that you flip your mattress regularly, but that’s not an option for today’s pillow-top mattresses. Check the tags on your mattress and see if the manufacturer recommends rotating your mattress occasionally to help it wear evenly.

After that, here are the steps to cleaning a mattress:

  • First, remove all sheets and other bedding and put them in the wash. Use hot water in your washer and high heat in your dryer.
  • Second, vacuum the entire mattress by using the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner. For the seams and crevices, switch to the crevice attachment and take extra time to remove dirt, dust, and other filth from all the nooks and crannies in your mattress.
  • Third, after vacuuming, spot-treat any stains on the mattress with an upholstery cleaner. A solution of one teaspoon mild dish detergent mixed with a cup of warm water should work, as well.
  • Next, you can deodorize the mattress by sprinkling a good coat of baking powder over the entire mattress surface. This could take up to a pound of baking soda, depending on the size of the mattress and how dirty it is. Leave the baking soda on the mattress for up to 24 hours (which means you might need to sleep elsewhere in the home for an evening).
  • After the baking soda is done deodorizing, vacuum the mattress again with the upholstery attachment. Also, if you don’t have a mattress cover, consider buying one to protect your mattress from dirt and odors.
