Whether it’s a cake for a birthday or dessert, virtually everybody envisions cutting a round cake the same way – by slicing it into triangles. While that can be an effective way to cut cake so that everybody gets a piece, the problem is the exposed area of cake (where the triangular pieces were cut) tend to become stale fairly quickly. Thankfully, there is a different way to cut cakes that keeps them fresher, longer.
- Next time you cut a cake, try this method:
- Start with a round cake (square and rectangular cakes can be cut this way, too).
- Make a cut directly down the middle of the cake, from one side to the other, cutting the cake in half.
- Turn the cake 90 degrees.
- Instead of making a cut directly down the middle again (cutting the cake into quarters) cut two parallel lines down the middle of the cake, about an inch or two apart.
- Lift out the two long, rectangular slices you just made from the center of the cake.
- Carefully push the two sides of the cake together so that the exposed halves of the cake meet together.
- Store the cake this way to keep it fresh.
When you’re ready to cut more cake, cut another lines down the middle of the cake, lift out your pieces, and bring the two ends of the cake together again for storage.
