Garbage disposals are great inventions, but it’s important to remember that – as convenient as garbage disposals are – you can’t put just anything down them. Not only can you clog your drain by shoving the wrong item down your disposal, you can even break the disposal itself, leading to all the inconvenience of not being able to use your kitchen sink until your sink is cleared and a repair is made.
To avoid problems with your disposal, consider the following list of items residents can – and can’t – put down the disposals in our apartments for rent in Lady Lake, Florida.
Don't put down the disposal:
Fibrous vegetables – Certain vegetables are prone to getting tangled when they go down the disposal, such as celery. If it's tough and stringy, don't risk it!
Hard seeds or pits – In general, any large solid object which doesn't break down easily shouldn't be put in the garbage disposal. Avocado seeds are a big no-no!
Maple syrup – Not only does this thick, sugary substance attract insects, it can also harden and reduce the efficiency of the spinning blade.
O.K. to put in the disposal:
Seedless fruits – Any fruit with tiny seeds (and those whose seeds have been removed) should generally be fine to use with the disposal.
Carrots – As long as you chop them up beforehand, carrots are an ideal candidate for what should go into a garbage disposal.
