Most people will agree that the worst part of cooking at home is cleaning up afterwards. You’re bound to have a ton of dishes to wash and pots or pans that need scrubbing. But it doesn’t have to be so bad if you are mindful and use your cooking time wisely. You can keep your kitchen relatively clean as you cook by following these pieces of advice:
- Prepare before you start – Empty your dishwasher and clean all of the countertops before you start cooking. This will give you a nice clean kitchen to start with and allow you to put dirty dishes right in the dishwasher as you use them.
- Set up a garbage bowl – Having some sort of bowl near your work station will give you a spot to throw your peels, trimmings, wrappers, or anything else that you want to throw away, without the need to walk to the garbage can and risk dropping or spilling anything.
- Clean spills up immediately – If you spill something, stop and clean it right away. This will prevent you from forgetting about it and make it easier to clean before it dries up and sticks to a surface.
- Wash as you go – If you are done with a bowl, rinse it out and load it into the dishwasher. This will prevent dishes from stacking up in the sink that you’ll have to take care of once the meal is over.
- Clean while you wait – If your meal needs to cook inside of an oven or a pan, use this time wisely. Rinse anything you can and put them in the dishwasher. Clean up anything on the counters and throw away any trash that might be lying around.
- Soak things while you’re eating – Some pans or containers will require soaking in water and soap before they can be cleaned. Start them soaking before you sit down to eat, that way when you’re finished, they should be ready to be rinsed out and loaded into the dishwasher.
