A fever is the temporary increase in the body’s temperature, in response to a disease or illness. It is characterized by having a temperature of over 99.5 degrees, when measured orally. It can be an important part of the body’s defense against infection. Common causes of a fever include colds, flu-like illnesses, ear infections, sinus infections, and bronchitis.
A fever typically isn’t dangerous, unless it rises above 104 degrees. For most fevers, the only option is to take it easy at home and let it run its course. Here are some ways you can do that:
• Lower the thermostat in your apartment
• Wet a washcloth with cold water and lay it across your forehead
• Get plenty of rest
• Make sure to stay hydrated, drinking water, juice, and herbal tea
• Eat a cold food, such as a popsicle, fruit, or smoothie
• Take a fever-reducing medication
Hopefully, by following the tips above, you’ll be back to feeling healthy and energized once again. If your fever gets too high (over 103 degrees) or lasts longer than 48 hours, call your doctor to get help right away.
