In 1944, a U.S. airman named Benjamin Green, who was from Miami, developed the first effective sunscreen lotion to protect himself and his fellow soldiers during the Second World War. He would later go on to found the Coppertone Corporation.

Florida’s Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center have long been the launching points for nearly all manned NASA space missions. In fact, Mercury II, in which John Glenn became the first man to orbit the earth, and Apollo 11, the first lunar-landing spacecraft, both launched from Florida.
