Managing Your Social Media Presence at Our Lady Lake, Florida Apartments

Being able to manage both your privacy and your image via social media is a good skill to have in this day and age. With potential employers, business contacts, and even dates or friends constantly checking online profiles, having a great social media page on Facebook or LinkedIn has become almost as important a part of presentation as remembering to shower, get dressed, and comb your hair in the morning.

Here are a few important tips to help ensure that your digital profile is protecting your privacy and projecting the image you want it to:

  • Check your digital trail – An important first step before you modify your actual profile is to enter your name in Google or another search engine and see what you find. If what shows up on both the standard and image searches is not what you would like to see, or does not frame you in a flattering light, you may have more work to do.

  • Limit your profile’s searchability – The default settings of many social networks like Facebook or LinkedIn allow anyone to find your profile online. On both networks, you can go to your account settings and modify your privacy settings to disable public searches from showing your profile. On Facebook, you can also go to the Edit Profile tab and select privacy level, which will allow you to set either independent data points (like an image) or your entire profile to Public, Friends, Only Me, or Custom.

  • Keep your profile picture appropriate – Make sure that your profile picture is tasteful and G rated. While this applies doubly for professional networks liked LinkedIn, it’s also critically important for Facebook or any other social media site. Even if your Facebook account is set to friends only and is fully search restricted, a public user will still be able to see your name and profile picture.

  • Take control of tagging – On Facebook, default settings allow friends to tag you in photos and profile posts, which they may have set to public without your knowledge. If this does not sound like something you approve of, you can go to “How Tags Work” under the Privacy settings and opt out of this feature. You also can set up a review tags option that allows you to examine and approve every tagged picture before it goes live and is linked to your profile.

  • Think before you post – Finally, the most important social media management tool is your own common sense. Think long and hard before you post anything, as the Internet has an especially long memory. Copies of most Internet pages are stored somewhere in perpetuity, so seriously consider whether posting an off-color joke or an emotionally charged response is really worth it in the long run.

If you keep these tips in mind, you’ll soon be an expert at managing you social media presence. Best of all, you can do all of this right from the comfort of our Lady Lake, Florida apartments at The Quarters.
