Gallery Wall Mistakes to Avoid When Renting

Probably the biggest mistake that most renters make when decorating is—not doing it. Perhaps they don’t want to invest time and energy in making their apartment feel like home because they figure it’s temporary, or they’re worried they might have difficulty getting their deposit back when leaving. However, it’s important to enjoy living in your apartment while you’re there, and creating a gallery wall with your favorite artwork, family portraits, or framed vacation photos is a great way to truly make your apartment your home-sweet-home. What’s more, you can use no-damage picture-hanging strips to mount your photos to the wall without worrying that you’ll have lots of nail holes to fill and repaint when you move out.

With that said, if you’re ready to put together a gallery wall that you’ll be excited to show off to guests, make sure you avoid these common gallery wall mistakes:

Failure to plan ahead

Some interior decorators suggest that you draw a rough version of your planned display on a piece of paper. Then, following your design, cut out paper shapes that correspond to the size and shape of your various pieces of artwork and use painters’ tape to mount them on the wall so you can see how your display will look. If your proposed gallery wall doesn’t look balanced, you can move your faux artwork around until your exhibit is the perfect model for the real thing.

  1. Displaying multiple pieces of art, all of the same size and shape

Variety is the spice of life. Lining up rows of pictures that are all the same size and shape can be boring. Instead, try using one dominant piece of art—such as a large poster—and group two or three smaller pieces next to it.

Hanging artwork with inconsistent spacing

You don’t want to hang your display items so close together that they looked crowded, and you also don’t want them so far apart that they don’t look like a collection. Experts often recommend hanging gallery pieces about 3 inches apart and making sure the spacing is consistent. Also, make sure to leave at least 12 inches of space between the lowest point of your display and any furniture below.
