Moving out of your old apartment into a new one is like starting a new chapter in a book or TV series—you want to move on without looking back. So, you probably don’t look forward to cleaning your old apartment, especially considering you’ll also spend time cleaning your new one before you move in. However, putting your old apartment back the way you found it is the right thing to do for the next tenant. And there’s a good chance that your rental agreement requires it as a condition of getting your deposit back.
No matter how long you’ve lived in your apartment, you’ve likely grown so accustomed to your surroundings that you don’t notice the grime, scuff marks, and other souvenirs of your occupancy that your apartment has collected. Take a close look at your ceilings, walls, floors, cabinets, and countertops, and make notes as to any dirt or damage you see. Add these to your basic move-out cleaning checklist, which usually includes:
- Removing nails from the walls and patching holes
- Repainting if you changed the paint color or touching up the paint if you didn’t
- Dusting the ceiling fans, light fixtures, and windowsills
- Wiping down all doors, including those on cabinets
- Deep cleaning all sinks, tubs, showers, and toilets
- Thoroughly cleaning your microwave, oven, and refrigerator
- Using glass cleaner on mirrors and interior windowpanes
- Scrubbing scuff marks from baseboards
- Vacuuming and mopping the floors
- Double-checking for dust bunnies and cobwebs in corners
- Making sure to properly dispose of all trash
It’s a good idea to take photos of your apartment after you’ve cleaned it, preferably during a walk-through with your landlord.
